Powerpoint presentation (PDF)
The Santa Clara Valley Water District hosted at a community meeting regarding the Upper Llagas Flood Protection Project, a joint project with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Attendees heard updates on the project's design process and a proposed project element at Lake Silveira (click on link above).
Lake Silveira is located within a 50-acre parcel in Morgan Hill off of Monterey Road, just north of California Avenue. The water district is working with Santa Clara County Parks and Recreation and the city of Morgan Hill on this project element.
To date, progress on the project has been slow, primarily due to challenges in obtaining federal funding. The water district and Morgan Hill have decided to complete the design and any environmental documents to keep the project moving along.

Brief description:
As part of the water district’s 15-year Clean, Safe Creeks and Natural Flood Protection Plan approved by the voters in November 2000, the Upper Llagas Creek Flood Protection Project, located in San Martin and the cities of Morgan Hill and Gilroy, will provide flood protection to communities along the East Little Llagas Creek, West Little Llagas Creek and Llagas Creek in San Martin and Morgan Hill. In addition, the project design is being updated to protect homes, businesses and acres of agricultural land to preserve and enhance the creek's habitat, fish and wildlife.
The project extends approximately 13 miles from Buena Vista Avenue nort to just beyond Llagas Road. The project will provide 100-year level of flood protection in the urban areas of Morgan Hill, as well as an approximate 10-year level of flood protection and no induced flooding in the agricultural areas of Gilroy and Morgan Hill.
Project scope of work/goals:
To provide flood protection for 1,100 homes, 500 businesses, and over 1,300 acres of agricultural land in southern Santa Clara County.
